A YouTube video showing how to make and use an activity to encourage emergent readers to move from blending words to reading words.
The focus is on CVC words and word families.
Once large scale versions of CVC words are made, pupils then can blend them by pressing a button under each sound. A little car is then driven quickly under the letters to encourage speedier blending, aka reading.
The video links to a blog where it is possible to buy a ready made pack of this activity.

Suggestions for use: This activity would be excellent to use during literacy station teaching (e.g. during literacy lift-off or power hour etc...). Each pupil could have their own base board and car with a shared pool of words in the centre. It could be easily differentiated by providing different words to different groups. The activity could also be extended to include CVCC words with 4 buttons for more competent/able readers or words containing digraphs.
This activity would also be very suitable for use in the classroom as an early finisher activity.
It could also be used to send home to help parents understand the move from blending words to reading words.

This link is to a blog page which outlines a simple idea to use in the classroom.
The idea is that you write with white wax crayon on white paper, and the pupil then paints over it with a watery paint mix to reveal what you have written.

Suggestions for use: This could be used to teach sight words, such as the Jolly Phonics tricky words, or other high frequency words.
It could also be used to teach letter sounds.
Whatever is written in white crayon becomes the subject of this lesson activity.
It could also be used as a more fun assessment tool - the teacher can record the pupil's responses as s/he paints over the letters/words to reveal them.

A simple game whereby pupils need to look at an object and then select the correct initial sound.
Covers the sounds j, z, x, v, y, qu, w.
If the wrong initial sound is selected, a sad face is displayed and you are returned to the image slide to choose again.
Once the correct sound is selected, a happy face is displayed and you can progress to the next slide.

Suggestions for use: Use this game after having taught the following phonemes: j, z, x, y, v, w, qu to reinforce teaching and learning objectives.
Can be used as an informal assessment tool: teacher can record pupil responses whilst playing the game with the full class.
As the game is self-correcting, pupils can play it independently. It could therefore be played during station teaching, e.g. using iPads/tablets or laptops during literacy hour.
