Not your ordinary type of crossword!
A communicative crossword requires two students to complete it. Each person is given the same crossword puzzle but with only half of the answers (e.g. Student A has the down words and the Student B has the across).
Split the class into As and Bs and distribute the crosswords accordingly - one to each student.
The children sit in way so that they cannot see each others crossword.
The pupils take turns to describeeach of the answers on their crossword without saying the word itself.

This activity can be adapted to any topic by using a website such as http://www.puzzle-maker.com/crossword to create crosswords.
