This online app will help you to determine how clearly you write. It will calculate the reading age of your audience based on word and sentence length. Copy and paste your text into the box and press calculate for the result. Suits persuasive writing, but not creative writing. (JC & LC, H/O)

Suggestions for use: Edit the paragraph provided in the app to eliminate the colours/highlights. When you are satisfied with your edits, cut and paste a paragraph you have written into the app. Again, edit the highlights using the guides on the right for more effective expression. Remember, this suits writing to persuade in a clear manner. It doesn't suit creative writing as much due to the advice about keeping adjectives to a minimum.

A brilliant course for those who wish to improve their writing skills. Dr. Clare Lynch, a University of Cambridge tutor, focuses on how to use language efficiently to argue and persuade. Currently, €11.99, but well worth buying. Fantastic for Leaving Cert students. (HL)

Suggestions for use: This is an interactive course which will teach and test you on what you have learned. If you covered one video lesson per day (5-10 mins) you would be a better writer in no time.

Keep drivel to a minimum with this program. It will give you a report on your sentence length. It does not make any changes to your work, leaving you in charge.

This is designed to introduce Hamlet to learners. It is a modernised version of the play that is intended to be enjoyable and encourage students to imagine that they are a character.

Strand unit: Hamlet
Suggestions for use: This would be very useful to introduce Hamlet to a senior class. As well as being relevant to the students' interests (it is based on the website "Twitter"), students are encouraged to become involved in the activity by writing "Tweets" based on the play.

This is a database I put together a few years ago focusing on some of Yeats's poems on the LC. Download and open the database; use the filters at the top of the spreadsheet to select what you wish to view. Begin with themes and look at language and imagery after that. Will work in Google docs, Excel or Open Office.

Strand: Poetry
Suggestions for use: When you open the database, be sure to use the filters at the top to find your way around, for example, you could choose to navigate poem by poem, or topic by topic. I have commented on various aspects of Yeats's poetry here, and included some extracts from research, but these are by no means exhaustive. You can add your own ideas and index them in the filters' section. Themes are covered in detail, but you could develop the imagery section more.

Suggestions for use: Much of the hard work has been done here - extracting quotations and grouping them etc. Students could make a mindmap for each theme to enhance their understanding of it.
