Unveiling our Past: The Struggle for LGBT+ Rights in Ireland is an LGBT+ inclusive history teaching resource for 5th and 6th classes.

It meets the objectives of the history curriculum under the strand ‘Politics, conflict and society’ for the objective ‘Ireland, Europe and the world, 1960 to the present’. It uses primary sources from the time to engage the pupils’ learning while also integrating the development of key reading comprehension skills.

Content objective:
This resource should enable a child to:
  • acquire insights into the attitudes and actions of people in contemporary Ireland
  • acquire some knowledge of the major personalities, events or developments in these periods
  • begin to develop some appreciation of the ‘mind-set’ of former generations
  • develop a growing sense of personal, national, European and wider identities
  • engage in simple studies of some of the more important aspects of periods in which political changes or movements have had an important influence on the lives of people in Ireland
  • explore, discuss, compare and develop some simple understanding of the attitudes, beliefs, motivations and actions of differing individuals and groups of people in the past
Suggestions for use: As an integrated programme of work to explore the struggle for LGBT+ rights in Ireland while also building on English comprehension and presentation skills.
